Cataloguing Volunteer (Microfiche)

We are working to catalogue our library collections however we have a huge backlog. One particular section of uncatalogued material is our microfiche. Many people have never encountered microfiche these days; it is a way of copying documents onto a transparent sheet but in a very small, scaled down format so that you can save space compared to keeping the paper document. Luckily, the main title and report number is also typed at the top in human readable sized print!

The volunteer searches two online databases for this report number / title then copy pastes the required data across into our online catalogue along with the number written on the microfiche envelope so we can locate it easily if required. Using copy-paste reduces data input errors and makes it faster too.

All of the work is carried out in internet browser windows (e.g. Edge, Chrome, Firefox) – no specialist software required.

There is a huge number of these to do so it will be quite a long term project. More than one person can work on it at once.

  • Accuracy - finding the correct matching report and also entering data into the correct field
  • Patience - searching for the correct report and doing a repetitive task
  • Familiarity with using a PC / laptop in general would be helpful but no specialist program knowledge required

  • Expenses reimbursed
Bus / Metro / Rail refunds up to the cost of a Dayrider per half day shift. Happy to repay proportional amounts of weekly / monthly ticket if that’s how you buy your travel.
  • Ongoing support
  • Volunteer induction
Full detailed printed instructions to explain the task.
