The Friends of Jesmond Library are looking for a new Chair of Trustees.

After 10 successful years of running a community library we need a new Chair to help us move forward to the next chapter. It’s an exciting time to join us. Last year we were awarded Library of Sanctuary status, ran our first Book Festival and appointed a Writer in Residence with the aid of funding from Arts Council England.

You will play an active part in the busy life of the library, leading the development of a future strategy that will ensure it continues to play a central role in the community and safeguards its financial future to benefit all Jesmond residents, and all library users from further afield.

  • Provide strategic leadership to the Board of Trustees, including chairing Board meetings
  • Ensure that the Board operates within its charitable objectives and provide a clear direction for the charity
  • Ensure that the governance arrangements are working in the most effective way
  • Ensure the sound financial health of the charity with systems in place for financial accountability
  • Act as an ambassador and the public face of the library to external organisations
  • Take advantage of city-wide networking opportunities to raise awareness of the library
  • Use own networks to create new partnerships and initiatives as well as nurture the library’s pre-established relationships
  • Have an overview of Trustees’ individual areas of work to ensure the Board functions as one unit
  • Establish good working relationships with volunteers

Time commitment – Board meetings every six weeks on Saturday mornings, 2-3 hours; average 3-4 hours a month for other meetings; average 1.5 hours a week following up on approaches to the library made by email.
