Engagement and Involvement Officer

Role Purpose:

  • To improve the experience of cancer patients by increasing patient participation and strengthening the network of patient/carer groups in the North East and North Cumbria, within the context of good collaboration.
  • To be the ‘face’ of Northern Cancer Voices and be passionate about continuous service improvement to achieve high quality care and to identify opportunities to promote the voice of cancer patients and their carers to help achieve this.
  • To ensure patients and carers can confidently make their views known and trust that Northern Cancer Voices will represent their views accurately by understanding concerns and helping build solutions.
  • To be responsible for supporting volunteers, planning and facilitating meetings, pre- and post- engagement briefings and liaison with the Northern Cancer Alliance as required.
  • To support and contribute to the delivery and development of services across the whole organisation.

You will have a very clear responsibility for ensuring that engagement with Northern Cancer Voices is meaningful and useful, and that groups/agencies are supported to engage effectively about their priorities and planning with NCV.

Main duties and responsibilities:

1. Recruit, support and publish patient voices

  • Working with partners, advertise for and recruit new members, particularly those from underrepresented groups, to help ensure geographic, demographic and cancer type representation.
  • Maintain regular and ongoing support and contact with network members.
  • Deliver or facilitate training or other support to enable people to engage.

2. Facilitate engagement activity

  • Promote a positive image of Northern Cancer Voices in all engagement activities.
  • Develop and facilitate engagement activity through a variety of mechanisms, such as large meetings, smaller focus groups, telephone calls, conference calls, video calls, chat forums, closed social media threads, surveys, emails and letters.
  • Organise and facilitate an annual programme of meetings.
  • Manage and regularly update all social media channels.
  • Maintain accurate records and diary of all communications, meetings and provide up to date information to ensure a comprehensive record of all activities.
  • Ensure timely feedback to and from the membership.


1. An understanding of and commitment to the aims, principles and policies of Northern Cancer Voices.

2. An understanding of the issues faced by people affected by cancer.

3. The ability and experience of creating, developing and maintaining relationships across a wide variety of individuals, groups and organisations.

4. Excellent oral communication skills and the ability to communicate well with a wide cross section of people including members of the public, statutory agencies, VCSE organisations and communities through various means.

5. The ability to communicate effectively in writing with particular emphasis on preparing presentations, reports and producing engaging social media posts.

6. The ability to monitor and maintain own standards, prioritise work and meet deadlines and targets.

7. The ability to give and receive feedback objectively and sensitively and a willingness to challenge constructively.

8. A flexible approach and the ability to work as part of a small team.

9. Excellent ICT skills and the ability to ensure the best use of IT systems and packages in the delivery of the project.

10. Current driving licence and the ability to travel
