Patient Support Volunteer

To provide emotional / social and practical support for patients and their families on the Adult In-Patient Unit.

Main Tasks:

  • Emotional and social support of patients (and families). Listening, reading, chatting etc.
  • Sitting with patients who are approaching death
  • Following advice from the care team, enabling appropriate patients to maintain their independence as long as possible. For example, this might involve encouragement to leave room and visit gardens
  • Sit with patients who are at risk of falls
  • Support patients with feeding and drinking if required
  • Ad-hoc provision of food and refreshments for patients and families (supporting the existing Ward Helper volunteer service)
  • Support nurses with simple tasks as required


  • Excellent communication skills with a broad range of people of all ages and backgrounds
  • Warmth and empathy and non-judgemental approach
  • Able to work under clear supervision but also on own initiative
  • Self-aware and able to identify limits of competence
  • Ability to model our values and standards of behaviour
