Remote Volunteering (Discovery Museum)

As our collections are becoming more accessible in an online format we are aware that a lot of the objects online have poor descriptions or, are lacking in descriptions.

Our Collections Search website is a tool that the general public can use to access information about the objects in the care of Tyne & Wear Archives and Museums. The goal is to improve the collections across all departments and venues with the project initially trialled on the objects at Stephenson Steam Railway.

The aim is to provide image descriptions of what the object is and attach this to the record so that it is visible online. This means that our aim for access for all is one step closer.

You can give as much or as little time as you like. The role will be completed at home so however much time you can commit is useful.

Skills

"How to" resources will be provided for volunteers to look through and familiarise themselves with the task.

  • A good level of computer literacy with access to, and knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Word and Outlook 365 is necessary for this role
  • Familiarity with the Collections Search website would be appreciated but is not essential
  • A good level of literacy although entries will be checked by the supervisor
  • Good time management skills and good organisational skills are necessary for this role to keep track of entries
  • Must be comfortable working alone and independently

The volunteer supervisor will provide written resources on ALT text and image descriptions. Also able to offer Zoom / Team chats to demonstrate or answer questions. An induction may be needed to talk volunteers through Better Impact. Training will inform volunteers of the overall process, how to register as a volunteer, create Better Impact profile, and receive an email pack with resources including an Excel spreadsheet.

Volunteers will be asked to work remotely at home to create image descriptions on their assigned objects. Once they have completed their section, volunteers will be allocated with more records depending on their workload.
