Supported Accommodation Project description:

Depaul UK a number of supported accommodation projects in the North East, this Volunteer role will be based in Simonside in Heaton.

Simonside provides supported housing to single young people, at risk aged 16-25. The project consists of 13 rooms and has on-site office which is staffed 24 hours.

The aim of the Project is to offer housing related support to enable service users to maintain a tenancy, maximize their independence and help them to take as much responsibility for their own life as possible. Staff will provide support, advice and guidance in all areas of life with particular focus upon maximizing benefits, accessing the education/training and developing to a person’s full potential.

Aim of the volunteer role:

To plan and deliver mentor taster sessions for the residents of the supported accommodation. This volunteer will promote the mentoring service to residents and will encourage an interest in cooking, budgeting and general life skills which will give the residents skills for managing their own tenancy. This mentor will be able to explain the mentoring programme to residents and complete support plans with residents.  This volunteer will be confident in leading groups and be able to come up with fun and exciting activities that residents would like to take part in.

Main Tasks:

  • To deliver mentor ‘taster sessions’ to residents of Simonside including cooking sessions, budgeting sessions as well as more relaxed sessions such as movie afternoons
  • To promote the mentoring opportunities to residents of Simonside during mentor taster session activities
  • To plan, promote and deliver fun and interesting sessions giving young people a taster of what mentor session will be like once matched with a volunteer mentor
  • To complete support plans with residents of Simonside / or take name for VMC to ring and organise meeting the young person if the young person prefers
  • To display posters, leaflets and promotional resources in Simonside (promotional material provided by the volunteering team)To communicate with VMC and project staff to ensure safe and positive delivery of activities
  • To adhere to the terms of Depaul UK’s policies and procedures currently in force and its Code of Practice
  • To observe clear professional boundaries in our relations with the young people we work with
  • To be there as a positive role model for Depaul residents and provide practical support which may include being a listening ear
  • To take part in support sessions every 8 weeks with supervisor
  • To claim back expenses via Emma Mohan


Volunteers should have an understanding of the issues faced by disadvantaged young people such as homelessness.  The ability to volunteer in a non-judgemental manner is also essential. Good communication, listening and the confidence to take lead on practical activities.
