Community Garden Leader

Create, develop and run a group of local people interested in gardening who will look after the gardens and ensure that they are used and shared resources for the community.

You will be expected to:

  • Be aware of and comply with all relevant safeguarding requirements
  • Ensure the environment is safe for everyone involved Know how to respond to and report any safeguarding concerns or allegations
  • Providing the group with information about growing techniques, plants, and wildlife in the space.
  • Source materials (seeds, plants, compost, etc.)
  • Supervising the group to make sure tasks are completed safely and correctly, following risk assessments.
  • Work with Churchwardens and Clergy to coordinate volunteers
  • Work with the treasurer to manage the group's budget.
  • You will be expected to encourage and a mentor a group will made up of members of the community with various levels of skills, knowledge, and needs.
  • You will be planning and delivering activities to carry out tasks like watering, weeding, planting, sowing seeds, pruning, and general maintenance throughout the seasons.
  • Ensure that personal data is stored securely Attend meetings for your support, guidance or supervision 

Both gardens are in the grounds of the church (Church of the Holy Nativity, Hillhead Parkway, Chapel House, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE5 1DR).

When:

One Saturday or Sunday per month and/or Twice a month

We are open to discussing the best times for a group to meet based on what works best for people wanting to be involved

Skills

This role requires someone who:

  • Has qualification/certification/relevant experience in growing or gardening.
  • Pays attention to detail Understands and maintains appropriate boundaries of confidentiality
  • Has access to the internet and is confident using email
  • Has good communication skills Has good computer skills
  • Ability to communicate with people of different backgrounds, ages, and abilities.
  • Confident supervising and supporting a team of garden volunteers.
  • Is able to encourage and nurture skills in others
  • May be seeking more experience for a career in ecology, gardening, or horticulture and want to connect this to working in a community setting or community development.
  • Or you may be looking for something different in your spare time.
  • Patient and flexible with an understanding that people will come along to the group for different reasons, want to learn different things, and learn in different ways.
  • Builds good relationships with tact and sensitivity Is approachable and empathetic Is punctual Is willing to develop skills and to engage with training
  • Treats everyone with respect and dignity Works well as part of a team Is physically able to cope with the role
