Corporate team/staff volunteering

Come and join our friendly team for a day, we need you to transform the lives of unpaid carers in Newcastle. We know that unpaid carers, looking after a friend or family member due to illness or disability, face significant disadvantage. Carers are 23%more likely to suffer a stroke than someone without a caring role, young carers achieve an average of 9 grades lower than their peers. Yet, many carers struggle without support and don’t know about the help available to them.

You can change this by giving a day of your time to support our carers community whisperers programme.

Community Whisperers:

Staff can book in a volunteer day to become a Community Whisperer. Minimum 8 staff per day, the purpose of this volunteering is to improve identification of carers across the city of Newcastle. What is involved: Complete an intensive 2.5 hour carer awareness training session, going in depth about the challenges carers face, exploring language used to identify carers, practising with our ‘tips and tricks’ and hearing from our Marketing Team about available resources.

From this point it is over to you for the day. We set you off on a challenge to use the skills you have learnt to raise awareness of carers in your own community. This could be with work colleagues, in a local group, amongst their family and friends or online. One of the biggest challenges carers face is identification so this goes a long way to helping carers to get the support they need, when they need it.

Are you able to use a volunteering day to improve carer awareness and get carers access to vital support when they need it? It takes the average carer 2 years of caring before they are identified – you can help to change this, preventing carers reaching crisis before they get the help they need. Contact claire@newcastlecarers.org.uk to find out more and book your date.

Other opportunities to get involved:

Painting

We have a busy building at Newcastle Carers that is currently in need of refurbishment, if you prefer to get your hands dirty why not join us for a painting day and help us spruce things up for carers accessing the centre.

Group Delivery

Alternatively, if you have a talent or hobby why not volunteer your time to support the delivery of a carers group. We have had volunteers teaching interview skills through mock interviews for young adult carers, training carers to do calligraphy and card making. There are a whole host of options that we can discuss if you have a skill you are happy to share.

Fundraising

Last but not least, fundraising. As a charity we are always looking for people to fundraise for us. If you are happy to do a bake sale, jump out of a plane or run up a big hill we would love you to do it in aid of Newcastle Carers
