Wildflower Meadow Management

Each September, we carry out essential wildflower meadow management across our Parks estate to help preserve and enhance this vital habitat for wildlife. This annual activity is timed to follow the flowering season, allowing seeds to drop, and ensuring the meadow remains rich in biodiversity.

Why we do it:
Wildflower meadows are home to a wide variety of pollinators, insects, birds, and small mammals. Without regular management, grasses and aggressive species can dominate, reducing floral diversity and the habitat’s ecological value. Raking helps mimic traditional hay meadow practices, which are key to maintaining a healthy balance of species.

What it involves:

  • Raking and removing cut vegetation to prevent nutrient build-up
  • Monitoring plant diversity and spotting invasive species
  • Creating habitat piles for insects and small animals

Tools and guidance will be provided. We have over 15 parks that have wildflower meadows in so there’s plenty to get stuck in with.

Skills

No experience is needed- just enthusiasm and a willingness to get stuck in!
