Advice & Signposting Volunteer

InterAction provides support to those seeking asylum, refugees and migrants mainly 

through appointments and drop-ins, facilitating social connections and providing oneto-one case work support, offering advice and facilitating access to key services in order 

to reduce destitution, homelessness and isolation.

During the InterAction drop-in, the casework volunteers meet clients to work out what 

type of help they need, find the right sources of support and arrange for them to access 

it. They also sign-post clients onto specialist local services for advice on immigration, 

advocacy, benefits, housing, mental health, debt, finding work etc. 

Tasks & Responsibilities include:

• Providing one to one support undertaking sensitive and comprehensive 

meetings with clients to assess their need

• Agreeing a plan of action with the client

• Support the client to access other services, for example from Migrant Help, 

NHS, legal representatives, Local authorities, and Social Services.

• Offering onward referral to relevant bodies as appropriate

• Maintaining effective client records using our data capture system

• Identify and respond appropriately to safeguarding and protection issues with 

vulnerable clients, including children and vulnerable adults

• Working effectively with interpreters


InterAction Drop-in clients
Time Commitment: 5 hours per week, Thursdays 09.00 -14:00 (preferably most weeks, 
but at least once a month). 
Location: Newcastle city centre

Skills

 A genuine desire to support asylum seekers and other migrants

• An understanding of the need to maintain safe professional boundaries
• An understanding of the need to maintain confidentiality (except for 
safeguarding reporting)
• Knowledge of safeguarding and supporting vulnerable adults 
• Experience with vulnerable people 
• Understanding of face-to-face client work and/or casework
demonstrating excellent communication and proven listening skills 
• Willing to adhere to Our Casework Good Practice Standards

Good interpersonal, diplomacy, communication and teamwork skills
• Personally resilient as you may need to deal with challenging situations
• Functional English (speaking other languages is also desirable)
• Some basic awareness of the issues facing asylum seekers and other 
migrants 
• A commitment to empowering and enabling others 
• Warmth, understanding, sensitivity and a willingness to listen 
• Strong interpersonal/communication skills
• A flexible approach to clients whose needs may vary or change over time 
• The ability to be supportive and non-judgemental regardless of clients’ age, 
race, sexuality, religion or disability 
• To be willing to learn from own and others’ experiences 
• To maintain strong lines of communication with the Project Manager
