Learning Kitchen

We're looking for an experienced, enthusiastic individual to support our residents in learning basic cooking skills, nutrition and cooking on a budget in our Learning Kitchen. This would involve leading in food preparation, managing inventory, ensuring strict hygiene and safety standards, and facilitating small group sessions. This opportunity will enable you to support people who have experienced homelessness and other life challenges, helping them to improve their life skills and build their confidence, whilst encouraging them to improve their health and wellbeing, and social skills.

Time Commitment: Max 5 hours per week, to be regularly reviewed.

Role Purpose

To assist Tyne Housing in delivering safe and enjoyable cooking sessions to small groups of Tyne residents in our Learning Kitchen, helping them to learn new skills and understand cooking on a budget.

Key Responsibilities (appropriate training provided)

  • Ensure a welcoming, friendly and safe learning environment
  • Lead on food preparation, managing inventory and food shopping
  • Ensure strict food hygiene and health and safety standards
  • Follow safeguarding policies and procedures
  • Lead on facilitating small group sessions, introducing cooking techniques, recipes,cooking on a budget, etc
  • Managing group communications, registers, and assisting with associated paperwork
  • Adhere to Tyne’s Volunteering, and related policies and procedures

Skills

  • Aged over 18 years
  • Experience of, or the ability to confidently support vulnerable adults
  • Strong communication skills and a patient, non-judgmental attitude when working alongside vulnerable residents, staff or other volunteers
  • Strong communication, organizational skills, and a flexible and positive attitude
  • Willing to undergo a DBS check, and complete basic training, e.g. food hygiene, Health and Safety, Safeguarding, First Aid, etc
