All participants have skills and knowledge that they can share. Your role as a small group facilitator is to create opportunities for participation and to encourage confidence in language ability.
Tasks include:
- Responding to suggestions given for group activities/ themes for conversation
- Planning / preparing resources
- Facilitating small group activities and discussions
- Support involvement of people of different language levels
Skills
- Open-minded, non-judgmental, warm and welcoming,
- a good listener, patient, excited to learn from others,
- able to encourage participants to share what they have to say and what they’d like to learn,
- willing to use a variety of methods to promote communication,
- sensitive to the challenges members may face, committed to confidentiality,
- committed to inclusion and equality, able to encourage and promote a safe, friendly environment,
- willing to be involved in a group project, initiative and ability to volunteer unsupervised, while knowing when and how to ask for advice
