Small group facilitator

All participants have skills and knowledge that they can share. Your role as a small group facilitator is to create opportunities for participation and to encourage confidence in language ability.

Tasks include:

  • Responding to suggestions given for group activities/ themes for conversation
  • Planning / preparing resources
  • Facilitating small group activities and discussions
  • Support involvement of people of different language levels 

Skills

  • Open-minded, non-judgmental, warm and welcoming,
  • a good listener, patient, excited to learn from others,
  • able to encourage participants to share what they have to say and what they’d like to learn,
  • willing to use a variety of methods to promote communication,
  • sensitive to the challenges members may face, committed to confidentiality,
  • committed to inclusion and equality, able to encourage and promote a safe, friendly environment,
  • willing to be involved in a group project, initiative and ability to volunteer unsupervised, while knowing when and how to ask for advice
