Learning and Engagement Support Volunteer

We need volunteers to  assist with the delivery of our popular schools and education program.

Help us welcome children and young people to the Victoria Tunnel and the Ouseburn Valley, and bring the past to life!  

You will lead sessions on WWII or the Industrial Revolution, greeting school groups, scouts groups, and alternative provision groups, escorting them through the Ouseburn Valley and into the tunnel, delivering guided tours and educational workshops, as well as imparting basic health and safety information.

You might dress up as historical characters, and crafty, creative people will have the opportunity to make their own costumes, develop their own activities, and make their own resources in collaboration with the Trust staff.

Time Required 

• A typical school visit is split into two halves – groups spend one hour doing a classroom-based workshop on their chosen theme, and one hour having a tour of the Tunnel. 
• The groups are split into two, and swap between the activities. 
• You can volunteer in the classroom or in the tunnel, but ideally you would be comfortable with both parts of the session. 
• We also run guided walks for students around the Valley, which last for one hour and a half. 
•  School sessions take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays during term time, and last for two hours.
• Session start times are 10:00 or 12:30; you can therefore expect to volunteer for around two and half hours (including session set-up and pack-down).

Skills

We’re looking for people who:

• Enjoy working with children and want to engage and inspire them
• Are confident communicators with a range of audiences, or would like to develop their abilities to lead and talk to groups
• Are approachable and friendly to visitors
• Are willing to dress up as historical characters (at least now and then!).
