Assistant Youth Worker

This role aims to assist staff and other volunteers in delivering youth and community work activities for young people involved in Tyneside Outdoors’ Youth Groups, taster days and events. Volunteers in this role are expected to adhere to all relevant organisation policies such as Health and Safety, Safeguarding, etc

Tasks:

  • Assist staff and other volunteers with the organisation of youth groups sessions, this may include packing equipment, booking venues, organising games and activities
  • Participate in activities with youth group members, and other staff and volunteers, in a way that encourages young people to get involved and promotes their enjoyment, development and learning
  • Contribute where you can in all aspects of the youth session, this includes taking part in planning meetings, writing funding bids, etc. (including all the boring stuff!)
  • Help run stall & activities at events to promote the work of TO, presenting yourself and the organisation in a positive way
  • Behave in such a way that is not threatening and offers everyone equal chances to participate in their own way. (no swearing, bullying, etc.)
  • Take pride in your role as a representative of TO, i.e. No swearing, be polite, answer questions where possible, wear TO T-shirts on activities
  • Be supportive of other staff and volunteers in difficult situations and work as part of a team
  • Report any matters of concern to other staff and volunteers
  • Respect the confidentiality of participants within organisational boundaries
  • Have fun - (it's the law!)

Skills

Volunteers in this role will be reliable and trustworthy individuals able to take responsibility for their own participation and safety, i.e. wearing the right clothing, carrying the right equipment, etc, and take responsibility for other young people's participation and safety.

Volunteers will need a good sense of humour, be able to have fun with others and be able to support young people of all ages and abilities to take part and have fun. Volunteers will also require a good degree of stamina and motivation to keep other young people motivated, for example in the rain and cold, during group disagreements, etc.
