Group Facilitator

Sense Ability Matters (SAM) are a local Charity supporting people who have a disability, sensory impairment olong term 

health condition on their journey to independence. We deliver early intervention, crisis prevention and integrated 

social activities to reduce preventable sensory loss, maintain independence and mental wellbeing and reduce social 

isolation.

The Role

We are keen for volunteers to assist us to deliver a wide range of community groups for people in Gateshead and South Tyneside. Helping to reduce social isolation, increase confidence and improve health and well-being.

Group Facilitator responsibilities include:

  • Group set up - setting up activities and refreshments before the group session begins. Ensuring activities and refreshments have been cleared away at the end of each group session.
  • Welcome members – greet attendees when they arrive and offer support with the provision of refreshments.
  • Facilitate activities - Communicate with attendees, while offering encouragement and support to enable them to engage in activities.
  • Provide feedback - Communicate regularly with the Volunteer Officer or an appointed member of staff to provide updates of group attendance and development

Group times and venues will be confirmed depending on your availability but examples of current groups that need support

Wednesday

  • 13:00-15:00 Ladies Group Weekly

Thursday

  • 10:00-12:00 Reminiscence Group Fortnightly

  • 12:00-14:00 B-Social Mixed Social Group Weekly
  • 13:00-14:30 Men’s Club Weekly
  • 13:00-14:30 Seated Exercise Weekly Salvation Army

Groups are developed according to the needs for the community we support




Skills

  •  Volunteers must be 18 years or over
  • Commit to a minimum of 2 hours per week
  • Good time management
  • A sensitive attitude towards other people
  • To be open minded and non-judgemental
  • A friendly and patient approach
  • Enthusiastic with a positive attitude
  • Good communication skills
  • An awareness or experience of the issues affecting people with a disability or long term health condition
  • Reliable and trustworthy
